Buddha Purnima, also known as Buddha Jayanti, is a major festival in Bangladesh celebrated by Buddhists to honor the birth, enlightenment, and death (Nirvana) of Gautama Buddha. It falls on the day of the full moon in the month of Baisakh in the Bengali calendar. Being a predominantly Muslim country, the festival of Buddha Purnima in Bangladesh holds immense significance among the minority Buddhist community there, who celebrate it with great reverence and devotion.
On Buddha Purnima day, Buddhist monks and devotees visit the monasteries for communal meditation and prayer sessions. The day begins with prayers, sermons on the life of Gautama Buddha, religious discussions and group meditation sessions. Monks also recite ancient verses and Buddhists reaffirm their faith in the five principles called Panchsheel. The main ceremony takes place at Dharmarajika Bouddha Bihar, where a large fair is also held.
The Bangladesh government declared Buddha Purnima a public holiday, endorsing the importance and respect of diverse religious practices in the country. The venues housing the celebration are decorated with colorful decorations and illuminated with lights. People exchange gifts, donate to charity, and participate in processions and organized meals during the festivities. Some also take part in the traditional practice of 'Buddha bathing', symbolizing purification of one's own mind.
