Catholic Christmas Day, celebrated on December 25 in Ukraine, is one of the most significant holidays in the country. Interestingly, Ukraine is a country that celebrates two Christmases due to the implementation of the Julian calendar. The majority of the Ukrainian population is Orthodox and they celebrate Christmas on January 7, while Catholics, and those who have adopted the Gregorian calendar, observe the holiday on December 25. This day is declared a public holiday and full of spiritual intensity, joy, and family gatherings, following weeks of anticipation and preparation.

The celebration of Catholic Christmas Day in Ukraine is filled with rich traditions and rituals. Many Ukrainians attend a festive mass in churches early in the morning. One of the most important traditions is having a 'Holy Supper' which begins at the appearance of the first evening star and consists of twelve meatless dishes symbolizing the twelve apostles. The day usually ends with singing traditional Christmas carols, known as 'Koliady', around the neighbourhood or within the family.

During Catholic Christmas Day, Ukrainian cities are beautifully decorated with lights, ornaments, and Christmas trees, providing a festive aura that captivates both locals and visitors alike. In recent years, the participation in Catholic Christmas Day activities has been growing due to the influence of western traditions and the Ukrainian diaspora. Nonetheless, the heart of the celebration remains rooted in Christian belief and Ukrainian customs, making it an unique blend of old and new traditions.
