Commemoration Day, also known as Martyrs' Day, is a significant annual holiday in the United Arab Emirates. It takes place on 30th November every year, preceding the National Day celebrations. The day is held in honour and recognition of the sacrifice and dedication of Emirati martyrs, who have given their life in the UAE and abroad in the field of civil, military and humanitarian service.
This solemn day was first marked on November 30th, 2015, as part of a decree issued by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the UAE. The first to be honoured on this day was a group of Emirati soldiers who lost their lives in Yemen. On this special day, the UAE pauses as a nation to remember these national heroes with various solemn and reverential activities across the nation.
The Commemoration Day begins with raising the UAE flag and then a minute's silence in memory of the martyrs. The government encourages everyone to actively participate in the event by remembering and honouring the martyrs' sacrifices. Patriotic displays and public gatherings are also held to mark the day. This day is not just a day off but rather a time of reflection, remembrance and appreciation for those who gave everything for the UAE.
