Defender of the Fatherland Day is a significant holiday that comes from Russia. Celebrated every year on February 23, it began as a day commemorating the Red Army during the times of the Soviet Union in 1922 and in present times, this holiday keeps on being one of the most important date in the country. It honors both, active military service people and veterans, with the day being akin to the United States' Veterans Day.

This day was initially created to honor the military forces, but it has evolved into a broader event that recognizes all men – fathers, brothers, sons and friends – hence it is also informally known as Men's Day in Russia. It's a public holiday in Russia and it's marked with military parades, processions and other festive events. Families with servicemen celebrate this day at home if there is a member from their family in the military service.

Despite the holiday's military origin, over the years it has taken on a wider social significance in Russia. Many Russians take the opportunity to pay tribute to men in their lives, regardless of whether they have served in the military or not. Women often present gifts to the male figures in their lives, particularly their husbands, fathers and sons. It's a day of celebrating manhood, courage and patriotism in the Russian society.
