The Feast of the Assumption, also known as Santa Marija, is a well-celebrated holiday in Malta. This religious holiday marks the belief in the Virgin Mary's bodily ascent to heaven at the end of her life. In addition to its religious significance, this holiday also holds historic importance in Malta as it coincides with Operation Pedestal in World War II, which was a decisive moment that saved the Maltese Islands from surrendering to the Axis Powers.

On this holiday, Maltese locals and visitors alike can see the deeply-rooted religious traditions of Malta in action. Festivities often include religious processions, ornate church services, and the crowning of statues of the Virgin Mary. Colorful firework displays also light up the sky in celebration of the holiday. The villages of Attard, Mosta, Mqabba, Qrendi, Gudja, Ghaxaq, Victoria, and Birkirkara are notable places for experiencing the grand feasts.

Aside from the religious commemorations, the Feast of the Assumption is also a time for Maltese families and friends to come together and celebrate. Public squares are filled with food stalls offering traditional Maltese delicacies. Band marches, folk music, and dancing usually add to the lively ambiance. Meanwhile, agricultural shows and horse races, popular activities during Santa Marija, exhibit Malta's strong ties to its rural roots and further enrich the holiday experience.
