The First Day of Ramadan marks the beginning of a month long period of fasting and spiritual growth in the religious country of Brunei. Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. It is a holy month for Muslims around the world, where they fast from sunrise to sunset. This day is regarded as a time for religious reflection, prayer, doing good deeds and spending time with family and friends.

Similar to other Muslim-majority countries, the residents of Brunei observe the First Day of Ramadan with utmost sincerity and devotion. It is an official public holiday in Brunei. The sighting of the new moon marks the official start of Ramadan. People wake up early to have their pre-dawn meal, also known as 'suhoor', and at dusk, they break their fast with the meal called 'Iftar' which usually starts with dates and water, following the tradition of the Prophet Muhammad.

During the First Day of Ramadan and subsequently the entire month, the people of Brunei engage in recitation of Quran and making special night prayers, called Taraweeh. Special communal prayers are also held at mosques throughout the country. Brunei is known for its grand celebrations in the festive month and the food bazaars that sell traditional food and delicacies for breaking the fast are quite famous. It's a month where Bruneians exhibits hospitability, solidarity, and generosity.
