Limbii Noastre, also referred to as 'Our Language', is a holiday celebrated in the Republic of Moldova on the 31st of August each year. Its origin can be traced back to 1989 when the Moldovan SSR Supreme Court declared the Romanian language as the official language of the republic in the face of Russian dominance. The holiday was subsequently established to mark this monumental change and to serve as a testament to the cultural and historical importance of the Romanian language in Moldova.
The event is marked by an array of festivities including, but not limited to, concerts, festivals, exhibitions, and parades. It commences with the President of Moldova making a speech before the laying of flowers at the monument to national heroes - Stephen the Great. Schools and universities across the country also participate by arranging essay competitions and theatrical performances to bring the Romanian language and its culture to life.
Limbii Noastre is not just a time of celebration, it is also a period of reflection and reconnection with the Moldovan cultural identity. For many Moldovans, the day is a chance to express pride in their language and heritage. The holiday truly transcends the ordinary and serves as a bridge between past, present, and future generations of Moldovans, reminding them of the enduring resilience and rejuvenation of their language and culture.
