Christmas Day, observed annually on 25th December, is a national holiday in the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Much like most of the world, this tiny Caribbean nation transforms into a festive wonderland in the lead-up to Christmas. Citizens engage in a myriad of activities, with the season signified by the decoration of homes and public spaces with bright lights, lanterns, and seasonal ornaments that add colour and vibrancy to this festive period.
In Saint Kitts and Nevis, Christmas Day is a time of family reunions, feasting, and expressions of goodwill. A large chunk of the population are Christians, and they celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on this day with church services, singing of carols, and exchange of gifts. Additionally, traditional foods are an important part of the Christmas celebration. People prepare and enjoy meals that consist of local delicacies such as goat water stew, black pudding, and souse.
Besides religious ceremony and family gatherings, the arrival of Christmas also signifies the beginning of an important cultural happening: the National Carnival. The carnival runs from Christmas Eve right up to New Year's Day, with various events such as street parades, calypso competitions, and beauty pageants taking place.
