Christmas Eve, known as 'Štedrý deň' in Slovakia, is one of the most cherished holidays across the country. On this day, Slovaks engage in various traditional customs and rituals. The entire holiday season is packed with an array of delightful practices reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Slovakia. From the preparation of traditional Slovak dishes to the unique custom of bringing live fish at home a few days before Christmas, the homely and warm spirit of Christmas Eve is brought to life in every Slovak household.

The festive day usually starts with the families fasting in the morning and later on, participating in the Christmas Eve dinner which is typically the most ceremonious meal of the entire year. This meal often includes kapustnica (cabbage soup) and carp or other kinds of fish. Traditionally, it was thought that an odd number of dishes brings luck and prosperity. After dinner, families gather together and share the Christmas wafers called 'Oplatky', which are often blessed by a priest and are eaten with honey and garlic for good health and protection.

Another interesting aspect of Slovakia's Christmas Eve is the celebration style. Rather than focusing on buying expensive gifts, Slovaks prefer spending quality time with their loved ones and expressing heartwarming wishes. The festive mood is elevated with beautiful decorations, especially the Christmas tree which is decorated on Christmas Eve. This event is followed by exchanging presents that are often placed under the Christmas tree by Ježiško, the little Jesus. The peace and joy of Christmas Eve in Slovakia bring families together and pass on the unique traditions to future generations.
