Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday celebrated annually in Croatia. Notably held on the 5th of August, it commemorates the War of Independence that resulted in the country's liberation from Yugoslavia. This historic day specifically marks the anniversary of the capture of Knin by the Croatian Army during Operation Storm in 1995, substantially signifying the end of a major part of the war.
The day is officially known as 'Dan pobjede i domovinske zahvalnosti i Dan hrvatskih branitelja' in Croatian, which means 'Day of Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving and the Day of Croatian defenders'. This holiday does not only pay tribute to the country's victory in battle, but it also recognizes and thanks all the soldiers and civilians who lost their lives fighting for Croatia’s freedom.
Throughout the country, this patriotic day is observed with various commemorative events and ceremonies. This includes Mass, laying wreaths at the national memorials, military processions, and a presidential address. However, the center of attraction is the city of Knin, where a large Croatian flag is hoisted atop the Knin Fortress, marking the victory. Events like concerts and fireworks are also held, bringing Croatian communities together in a tale of shared history, struggle, and ultimately, triumph.
