Women's Day, observed every year on the 8th of March, is a significant public holiday in Belarus. This day acts as a celebration of the achievements of women in different spheres of life, be it social, economic, political or personal. Originating from the historical movement for women's rights and universal suffrage, the holiday serves to uplift the spirit of gender equality and pay tribute to women’s contribution to society.
The celebration of Women's Day in Belarus, like many other countries, consists of a combination of various customs. The day typically begins with men presenting the women in their lives- mothers, wives, daughters, colleagues, etc.- with flowers and gifts as a sign of love, respect, and appreciation. The nationwide occasion often sees various concerts, exhibitions, competitions, and events organised to commemorate the day and highlight the achievements of women.
Despite the original political roots of International Women’s Day, in Belarus, the focus has shifted over time to celebrating femininity and care. Children usually prepare handmade cards and small presents for their mothers and grandmothers, while partners arrange for special moments and memories. Governmental institutions and businesses also host award ceremonies for notable female figures, increasing public recognition for women in different fields. Nevertheless, amidst these celebratory elements, the essence of promoting women's rights remains intact.
