Kashmir Solidarity Day, observed on February 5th each year, is a national holiday in Pakistan. This day is of immense significance as it commemorates Pakistan's support and unity with the people of Indian-administered Kashmir, their ongoing freedom struggle, and to pay homage to Kashmiri martyrs who lost their lives fighting for Kashmir’s independence. It is also aimed at creating awareness and highlighting the various issues faced by the people living in Kashmir.
On Kashmir Solidarity Day, a variety of events are organized throughout Pakistan to express solidarity with the Kashmiri people. These events often include rallies, public meetings, and seminars, in which political and social leaders participate. Cultural shows and festivals are also organized, where songs and dramas on the Kashmir theme are showcased. Freedom Marches are arranged towards the Line of Control, which is the border separating Indian and Pakistani-administered Kashmir, to make a potent expression of unity with the people living in Indian-administered Kashmir.
Notably, the support for Kashmir is not restricted to this single day. Throughout the year, the press and the electronic media in Pakistan keep the national and international attention focused on the issue of Kashmir. However, Kashmir Solidarity Day has a special place as it magnifies the sentiment and unity of Pakistan with Kashmiris. It showcases to the international community that Pakistan stands hand in hand with the people of Kashmir, voicing for their right of self-determination under United Nations resolutions.
