Victory Day is a national holiday celebrated in Azerbaijan on May 9, each year. It is a day commemorating the surrender of Nazi Germany in 1945, marking the end of World War II in Europe. It holds much significance in the Azerbaijan history as it honours the memory of those who served in the war and gave their lives for the fatherland's liberation.
During the Second World War, over 600,000 people from Azerbaijan were drafted into the Soviet Army, where they fought bravely on the European front against Nazi forces. More than half of these soldiers lost their lives in the line of duty. The courage, bravery and sacrifices of these soldiers are remembered and honoured on Victory Day, reinforcing the values of patriotism and national pride.
On Victory Day, a variety of events and celebrations take place throughout Azerbaijan. Parades featuring veterans and military units are often a central part of the celebrations. Houses, streets, and public buildings are typically adorned with Azerbaijani flags and pictures of war veterans. It is a day of both reflection and celebration, honouring the past but also looking to the future, underlining important themes of unity, bravery, and resilience.
